Introduction (Why Evermore)

WiseSip is an eco-friendly brand based in the UK (near Newcastle) that design unique reusable products, built to last and not to harm the planet.

My name is Sam, I am the founder and product designer at WiseSip.

Before we create anything here at WiseSip we first define the problem and make sure that it’s a problem worth solving.

The problem that we believe is worth solving is this one: “Every Plastic Toothbrush Ever Made Still Exists Today”. In the UK alone, we throw away around 264 million plastic toothbrushes EVERY YEAR.

We want to put an end to this, which is why we created the Evermore Bamboo Toothbrush!

Defining the Problems that the Evermore Bamboo Toothbrush Needed to Solve

Before we started designing Evermore we created is a list of the main problems that we wanted to solve with our new design.

These problems related to other toothbrushes had been frustrating us for some time…

For each of these problems we created a ‘Design Aim’ aka our ‘Design Needs’. These needs were the key design points that, if missing, would mean that our product design would fail to solve all of the problems.

In the UK we throw away around 264 million plastic toothbrushes EVERY YEAR. Toothbrushes are very difficult to recycle as they contain a lot of different types of plastic. The bristles which are made from Nylon are not recyclable at all.

Main design aim: Minimise the amount of plastic in the toothbrush and aim for a 100% plastic-free product.

The vast majority of both plastic and bamboo toothbrushes have 100% plastic nylon bristles.

Nylon is not recyclable and, if it reaches the environment, can do serious harm to wildlife.

Design aim: Reduce the amount of plastic used in the bristles or make them 100% plant-based.

One of the drawbacks to bamboo toothbrushes is that the handles can go moudly.

Some people recommend that cleaning the bamboo between uses can solve this though, in our experience this doesn’t always work. It’s also a little annoying having to clean your toothbrush with a dry towel every time you use it.

Design aim: Create a toothbrush with a handle that is impossible to go mouldy

Both plastic and bamboo toothbrushes have a recommended lifespan of around 3 months, after that, they are thrown away.

We believe that by sourcing and using throw-away items that are not built to last, we are developing throw away habits.

Design aim: Create a toothbrush with a part(s) that can be kept and reused for life if they are well looked after.

Bamboo is a fantastic sustainable material, 100% biodegradable, super strong and the fastest growing plant in the world.

Unfortunately, to keep up with demand many places such as inland China are now cutting down indigenous trees and replanting bamboo in their place.

Design aim: Reduce the amount of bamboo used on our toothbrush design when compared to a regular bamboo toothbrush.

The vast majority of manual plastic and bamboo toothbrushes don’t stand up freely which is annoying.

We really don’t want that pot in our bathroom containing all of the family’s toothbrushes… these pots often have a bit of a nasty build up of mould at the bottom which is rather difficult to clean.

Design aim: Create a manual toothbrush that stands up freely on a bathroom cabinet or sink.

Putting Pencil to Paper

We collected all of our design aims together, did a lot of research and began putting pencil to paper.

It took around 3 months to complete all of the following design steps:

  1. Define the Problem
  2. Identify the Needs & Wants of the product (needs = product must haves | wants = nice to haves)
  3. Research & create a design ‘idea-board’
  4. Design the Product (put pencil to paper)
  5. Create the design on CAD (Computer-aided-design)
Once we were happy with the product’s design we contacted some amazing suppliers to make it into reality!
