Why do Bamboo Toothbrushes go Mouldy?

You are currently viewing Why do Bamboo Toothbrushes go Mouldy?

It so frustrating, mould always seems to build up on bamboo toothbrush handles.

Why does this happen?

In this post we discuss why mould builds up and we suggest a new solution to stop it happening FOREVER!

Mould Spreads Quickly on Bamboo

Since learning about the harm that plastic waste does to the environment I have made swaps to more sustainable products… one such product is bamboo toothbrushes.

I have been using bamboo toothbrushes for a while and found that they always go mouldy after using them despite my best efforts cleaning them between uses

Curious, I did some research and discovered that Organic materials (meaning materials with a high carbon content) harbour mould over time when exposed to warm and damp conditions. Bamboo is one of these materials.

To get a little more scientific on the matter, it’s actually the high content of starch and sugar in bamboo which make it so susceptible to mould growth.

Moisture Builds up on the Bamboo Handle

The bamboo handle is definitely the biggest culprit.

If you think about it, when you finish cleaning your pearly whites, you will most likely place the toothbrush down into a pot or holder.

The water left on your toothbrush head then trickles down the brush towards the handle

With a plastic toothbrush, this water can be wiped away, but unfortunately with a bamboo toothbrush, the highly absorbent handle will soak up the water.

This, paired with the damper environment of a bathroom, usually results in a pretty mouldy toothbrush even if you try and clean with a towel between uses – not ideal for hygiene & cleaning your mouth with.
